Everyday English, Wyoming
Shared language is a powerful gateway to participation in any community, including that of Wyoming on the Central Coast of New South Wales.
In that community, there are a number of people whose native language is not English and subsequently find themselves isolated to its margin, excluded from full participation and flourishing in it.
Wyoming Church of Christ noticed this dynamic and created Everyday English in response, a program that teaches conversational English to members of the local community. Classes provide the opportunity for sharing experiences and developing relationships with Australians and people from various cultures. They include speaking, reading, listening and writing through a range of practical activities and lessons.
Conversational English classes allows new migrants to improve their confidence and competence with English, thereby allowing them to become fully functional members of the community including gaining access to employment.
